By car
Traveling around Costa Rica in a rental car gives one the freedom to move around and take advantage of a wide variety of activities, adventures and sites. . . like the numerous options for “day trips” to other beaches, towns or National Parks surrounding San Juanillo. A 4x4 is not a necessity but it makes travel more comfortable especially during the green months, August and September, and for going up steep hills, (like the one to Hacienda del Cielo!). There are rental car agencies in San Jose (with agents inside and lots just outside the airport or in the Central part). We have excellent relationships with a variety of reputable car rental agencies and can find you the best deal on the best vehicle for your needs. Just ask !
The shortest route from San Jose to San Juanillo is across the new bridge on the Tempisque river. The entire trip will last about 5 hours. From San Jose airport follow directions towards San Ramon, Puntarenas and Liberia. After about 90km you come to the only “major” intersection where a turn will take you to Barranca and Puntarenas. Stay on the main highway and you will gradually curve to the north.
Approximately 30 km later, on the way to Liberia, turn left at the Shell gas station, following the signs to "Puente de la amistad de Taiwan". (The new bridge) After crossing the bridge continue on towards Nicoya, turning only once - a right where this highway ends. Follow the signs on past the Nicoya turnoff to Santa Cruz, where you should stop at a gas station to fill up, since there aren't many other gas stations on the coast. Just after exiting Santa Cruz towards Liberia, you will cross a bridge. Immediately past the bridge take the first road on the left following the signs to Paraiso. (See “Maps”)
By Bus
For those ready to “sit back and relax” while they commute from San Jose to (this particular) paradise, the public transit system is not a bad option. Bus travel from San Jose to Santa Cruz is cheap (about $5), relatively dependable, takes about 4 hours and also allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery. Two companies, Tralapa and Alfaro, offer service to Santa Cruz, with buses running nearly every hour. Any taxi driver in San Jose will be able to drop you off at either station. The buses are usually large, modern, long distance passenger buses with reclining seats.
Bus service to San Juanillo is available at 12:30pm, at the terminal across from the new “Super Compra”. Buses are crowded, slow and tend to make lots of stops to pick-up or drop-off passengers. The easiest way to get from Santa Cruz to the coast is by taxi, but costs about $30. There’s a taxi stand along the main street, mid-way between the arrival points of the two bus companies.
